Machine Safety Services Christchurch
Identify Risks. Protect Your People. Improve Machinery Safety.
Machinery safety involves more than installing a guard or checking an emergency stop. Effective safety measures consider how machinery operates, how people interact with it, the hazards involved and what happens when a safety component fails.
CJ Phoenix provides machinery safety services for manufacturers, engineering workshops, industrial facilities and businesses operating machinery throughout Canterbury.

Our services include:
- Machinery safety assessments: Identifying hazards, reviewing existing safeguards and recommending improvements.
- Machinery risk assessments: Evaluating machinery-related risks and determining appropriate risk-reduction measures.
- Machine guarding: Designing, modifying and installing physical guarding and protective systems.
- Machine safety controls: Safety relays, interlocks, emergency stops, light curtains and safety PLCs.
- Industrial automation and modifications: Updating machinery controls and automation systems to improve safety.
- Safety testing and validation: Testing and validating safety systems as part of separately scoped work.
- Documentation and certification: Developing the relevant safety documentation and undertaking applicable compliance processes.
Unlike providers who only identify potential problems, CJ Phoenix can also design and implement the solutions.
Preliminary Machine Safety Assessments
Not sure where to begin with machinery safety?
Our preliminary machinery safety assessment provides a practical starting point for understanding potential hazards and identifying improvements. We will visit your site, examine the machinery and its operating environment, and prepare a written report identifying areas of concern.
What does the assessment include?
On-site Machinery Inspection
A typical visit takes approximately 1–2 hours, depending on the machinery's complexity.
The review may cover:
- Machine electrical cabinet and controls
- Existing guarding and interlocks
- Emergency-stop arrangements
- Isolation and lockout provisions
- Access to hazardous moving components
- Operator interaction and maintenance access
- Machine manuals, documentation and previous modifications
- Existing hazards and potential failure points
We also speak with machine operators to understand how the equipment is used, including routine operation, cleaning and maintenance.
Preliminary Safety Report
Following the site visit, we prepare a comprehensive written report.
The report includes:
- Identified major and minor safety concerns
- Photographic evidence
- Findings prioritised according to risk
- Recommended corrective actions
- A quotation for further work, where required
Recommended Next Steps
If safety improvements are required, CJ Phoenix can provide a quotation to complete the corrective work and undertake further risk assessment, testing, validation and applicable compliance processes.
What's excluded?
The preliminary assessment does not include electrical switchboard assessments, safety testing, validation or compliance certification.
Machinery cabinets may be examined, but hazards and components must be visible and accessible.
Multi-machine production lines and more complex installations require individual scoping and pricing.
Travel within Christchurch is included.
Common Machinery Safety Problems
Small Issues Can Create Significant Risks
Machinery hazards are not always immediately obvious. Some risks develop over time through equipment modifications, changes in operating procedures or deterioration of existing safeguards.
Common problems our machinery safety specialists look for include:
Inadequate Machine Guarding
Missing or unsuitable guarding can expose workers to dangerous moving parts, trapping points and other hazards.
Incorrect Guarding or Interlocks
Guarding that can be easily bypassed, or interlocks that are unsuitable for the application, may fail to adequately protect operators.
Inadequate Emergency-Stop Arrangements
Incorrectly positioned or designed emergency-stop systems can prevent workers from responding effectively to an emergency.
Access to Hazardous Moving Components
Uncontrolled access to dangerous machinery can expose workers to serious or irreversible injuries.
Unassessed Machinery Modifications
Changes to machinery may introduce new risks, particularly where modifications affect the operation of existing safety systems.
Poor Isolation and Lockout Arrangements
Inadequate isolation provisions, ineffective lockout systems or unclear isolation points can place maintenance personnel and operators at risk.
Understanding AS/NZS 4024 and Machinery Safety in New Zealand
AS/NZS 4024 is a series of machinery safety standards covering risk assessment, guarding, safety-related controls and other aspects of machinery safety.
These standards provide important technical guidance when designing, modifying or assessing machinery and its associated protective systems.
Machinery safety is not simply a matter of ticking boxes. Appropriate risk assessment considers the hazards created by machinery, the likelihood and consequences of harm, and the suitability of existing protective measures.
What does AS/NZS 4024 mean for your business?
James McVicker explains:
“It's about ensuring guarding and controls are correctly implemented to keep everyone as safe as possible. AS/NZS 4024 isn't simply a checklist. It's part of a series of safety standards that provide the basis for assessing machinery safety.”
Existing, imported and modified machinery can all require safety review. Where machinery is modified, associated risks should be reassessed, appropriate safeguards considered, and documentation and operator training updated.
Alternative international standards may also be relevant, but their suitability for the New Zealand application must be established
From Assessment to Practical Safety Solutions
We Don't Just Identify Problems. We Help Solve Them.
One of the advantages of working with CJ Phoenix is our ability to provide machinery safety expertise alongside industrial electrical and automation capabilities.
Where an assessment identifies safety concerns, our team can develop and implement practical improvements.

Depending on the machine and identified risks, this may involve physical guarding, safety relays, interlocks, emergency-stop systems, light curtains, safety PLCs, electrical modifications or changes to machine automation.
We can also assist with documentation, verification, validation and applicable certification processes.
This integrated approach helps businesses manage machinery safety improvements through one experienced industrial team.
When Should You Arrange a Machine Safety Assessment?
A machinery safety assessment may be appropriate when:
- You've purchased or imported machinery.
- Existing machinery has been modified or upgraded.
- Workers have raised concerns about machine safety.
- A workplace incident or near miss has occurred.
- A WorkSafe concern has been raised.
- Existing guarding or emergency stops are questionable.
- You're reviewing workplace health and safety risks.
- You're unsure whether older machinery has appropriate safeguards.

Machine Safety FAQs
What is included in a preliminary machinery safety report?
The report identifies major and minor concerns, includes photographs, prioritises findings according to risk and outlines recommended corrective actions.
How long does a machinery safety assessment take?
A typical preliminary site visit takes 1–2 hours, depending on the machine's complexity. The written report generally requires another 1–3 hours.
Does the machine need to be operating during the assessment?
Not necessarily. However, observing machinery in operation can help the assessor understand its normal operation, operator interactions and potential hazards.
Does a preliminary assessment certify my machine as compliant?
No. A preliminary assessment identifies potential issues and recommends next steps. Comprehensive risk assessment, safety testing, validation and applicable certification are separate services.
Does AS/NZS 4024 apply to older machinery?
Machinery safety risks must be appropriately managed regardless of a machine's age. AS/NZS 4024 provides relevant technical guidance when assessing existing machinery and determining suitable protective measures.
What happens if my machine needs safety upgrades?
CJ Phoenix can provide a quotation for the required improvements, including guarding, safety controls, electrical modifications, automation changes and further assessment or validation.
Can CJ Phoenix assess multiple machines?
Yes. Multiple machines and production lines can be assessed, with the scope and pricing determined by their complexity and configuration.
